Gypsy Moon
03:56
|
|||
I could leave right now by the light of the gypsy moon
By the light, by the light, by the light of the gypsy moon
I could catch the fastest train out of this dusty town
You wouldn't know I was gone til the last of the moon went down
In the shadows it spills, I could fade and leave no trace
Just fade, just fade, just fade and leave no trace
Would you even notice I was gone
Cause I haven't felt your heat for so damn long
Oh that restless moon casts a spell on a lonesome girl
Casts a spell, casts a spell, casts a spell on a lonesome girl
I should leave you sleeping sound in our unmade bed
Let my heart wander round til my hunger is finally fed
Oh gypsy moon, hide your light while I steal away
Hide your light, hide your light, hide your light while I steal away
I'll take all I ever owned and all I ever held dear
Leave him empty and aching, wondering if I was ever here
By the light, by the light, by the light of the gypsy moon
By the light, by the light, by the light of the gypsy moon
By the light, by the light, by the light of the gypsy moon
By the light of the gypsy moon

Drunkard's Daughter
03:17
|
|||
I am the drunkard's daughter
Lord knows my daddy don't walk on water
He's a good man when he ain't drinking
When he finds that bottle he starts sinking
He goes so low he don't know the night from the morning
I keep on warning him I'll leave, but I don't go
I never go
Mama died when I was seven
Last year daddy joined her up in heaven
I don't think I'm a believer
Too many nights of drunks and deceivers
I go so low, I don't know
In a world full of demons no one's a free man
I say I'm gonna go, but I never go
I am my mother's daughter
Following you like a lamb to slaughter
Another sad and lonesome man
Thought I could save you but I can't
We go so low we don't know
We go so low we don't know
I say I'm gonna go
But I never go

I named you Ann the day you were born and wished you a better life
Before they took you from my arms, a preacher and his wife
I wanted everything for you
All the love I never knew
I remembered every time I cried
June 16th, 1935
You had my mother's eyes, bluer than the bluest sky, I wonder do you have your father's smile?
Does your nose freckle like mine when you're out too long in summertime
Do you think about me once in awhile?
I wanted everything for you
All the love I never knew
I remembered every time I cried
June 16th, 1935
You're grown and I am old, do you have daughters, do you have sons?
Do they have those blue sky eyes?
Have you found a love that's true with arms for only you
And a smile that will never say good-bye
I want everything for you
All the love I never knew
I remember when I cry
June 16th, 1935

I Never Asked
04:29
|
|||
I don't understand the whispered prayers that land at my feet
"Oh blessed one, the mother of God's son who intercedes"
You dress me all in blue as if somehow that hue claims my innocence
And how you paint my face, serene and full of grace to show no discontent
I never asked to be holy
To be raised above the lowly
I was just a child, just a child
I held him in my arms, protected him from harm though I always knew
He was never mine, he belonged to time and some kind of truth
What do you think I know, what wisdom can I show your misery
If I were good and pure I was as unsure with my own disbelief
I never asked to be his mother
To raise this child like no other
I was a child too, just a child
You glorify his names, and sanctify his claim to a holy crown
Say death did not win, he triumphed over sin, let the trumpets sound
If he escaped the grave and somehow he was saved and set free
Walks again on this earth, a miraculous rebirth, he never came back to me
I never asked to watch him die
I felt the nails, when the sword pierced his side
He was my child, he was my child

Holland Town
03:54
|

Holland Town, Holland Town where love lies cold beneath the ground
Holland Town, Holland Town
There's a cross that stands at the edge of Holland Town
Every Sunday at three, that's where Alice Watson can be found
On her knees she is praying to the Lord up above
To keep safe the soul of her one and only love
She was promised to Daniel Watson on the day she turned 16
A ransom for her family farm and Daniel's two best steeds
But her heart belonged to Peter Boyd and his eyes of cobalt blue
He swore that he would come for her, that she was his love true
Holland Town, Holland Town where love lies cold beneath the ground
Holland Town, Holland Town
Peter had no fortune to make his love his bride
Daniel owned the town and half the countryside
So Peter made a plan to take Alice for his own
They would meet under the harvest moon and be long gone before dawn
Daniel Watson, he had ears and eyes all over Holland town
On his belt he wore a .45 and was a shot of some renown
He waited by her window should Alice try to run
Spied Peter in the moonlight, took his aim, just one shot from his gun
Holland Town, Holland Town where love lies cold beneath the ground
Holland Town, Holland Town
Alice married Daniel on a cold December Saturday
Her veil covered her tear stained cheeks while Daniel had his way
Little could he know she was making her own plan
If she could not be Peter's bride, she'd be the wife of no man
She took her chance one April night while Daniel lay asleep
Under her pillow she'd hid her knife, she cut his throat deep
Buried him in the garden, next to his hunting shed
Told the neighbors he left town, no other words were ever said
Holland Town, Holland Town where love lies cold beneath the ground
Holland Town, Holland Town
There's a cross that stands at the edge of Holland town
Every Sunday at three, Alice makes her way down
On her knees she is praying to her Savior up above
To take her to her Peter, her one and only love

Red Bird
03:36
|
|||
Red Bird, flying in the dark
All alone underneath the moon
Red Bird, flying toward the dawn
Keep flying, you'll be there soon
Red Bird, you will find your way
Though the night might seem too long
Red Bird, do not be afraid
Keep flying, you'll be there soon
Fly, Fly
Red Bird, trust your wings
Through the skies that call to you
Someone waits in the morning
Keep flying, you'll be home soon
Fly, fly
Fly Red Bird
Fly Red Bird
Keep flying, you'll be home soon

Oh My Lorraine
05:04
|
|||
Lorraine, turn around walk away right now
Don't want you to see me say good-bye today
Lorraine, oh my Lorraine
Lorraine, I am bent, I am broken, I am spent
Can't let your words and tears make me sway
Lorraine, oh my Lorraine
Remember me when the apple blossoms bloom
The flower that reminds me of you
Remember me when the red-breasted robin sings
I'll send you his song in the spring
Oh my Lorraine
Lorraine, there's no peace, the devil haunts my sleep
I'm down on my knees, but I can't pray
Lorraine, Oh my Lorraine
Lorraine, please forgive, for my soul you must live
When my ashes are scattered and blown away
Lorraine, oh my Lorraine
Remember me among the white pine trees
As they grow to the sky where I'll be
Remember me under the shooting stars
I will be forever where you are
Oh my Lorraine

The Leaving Kind
04:05
|
|||
He said he could see it in my eyes
Just like his, they had that far off shine
And one day I would know what leaving is
My daddy said to me as he walked out that last time
People like us live life with one foot out the door
Dreaming and scheming for the fortunes we might find
People like us were made to always want more
We are the leaving kind
When I turned 16 I showed mama he was right
Took her car and drove away after another fight
Never looked back, knew I had to be free
No regular dreams and wishes would ever fit me
Couldn't spend my days and nights in one place
Same streets, shops and faces would make me lose my mind
My daddy knew it and then I knew I was a hopeless case
I was the leaving kind, I am the leaving kind
So you see, its not you its me
Been a wanderer since that prophesy
You can promise me the stars, not even love will make me stay
Sorry baby, its just my way, its my way
Always lived my life with one foot out the door
Never could stay too long or leave too much behind
I was made to be looking for something more
I am the leaving kind, I am the leaving kind

Sweet Dreams for You
02:11
|
|||
Sweet dreams for you, sweet dreams for you, sweet dreams for you
My Baby
September green turned to brown
I held you close, the wind blew round and round
round and round
Sweet dreams for you, sweet dreams for you, sweet dreams for you
My Baby
October blue, cloudless sky
only my tears as I said good-bye,
I said good-bye
Sweet dreams for you, sweet dreams for you, sweet dreams for you
My Baby
November gray, hollow and cold
My empty arms, now I'm growing old,
I'm growing old
Sweet dreams for you, sweet dreams for you, I'll see you soon
My Baby
